Series Recap: Mets Sweep Pirates

Monday, May 11th, 2009

Since yesterday was Mother’s Day, I didn’t get a chance to sit down and record a video (Family Always Comes First), so below are video highlights courtesy of ESPN.com plus my written serious recap.

After sweeping the Pittsburgh Pirates this weekend, New York Mets have now won seven in a row and have improved to 17-13 on the season and even though I don’t really look at the standings until June, I will note that the Mets are in first place. Below are some addition thoughts.

Series Take-Aways:

  • Let’s Not Get Too Crazy: While it’s always good to sweep a series, let’s remember this was against the god awful Pirates. Let’s keep this in perspective and remember there is a lot of baseball yet to be played but good job by the Mets this weekend.
  • A Couple of “Firsts”: This was the first time the Mets won a third game of a series this year. They were 0-7 coming into this game. This was also the first three game sweep for the Mets this season.
  • Scoring Late: The Mets scored 25 runs this weekend, 12 of the 25 were scored in the 7th inning or later. This is a good sign because up until this series, the Mets had been scoring early in games and then the bats would go to sleep. With the bullpen the Mets have this year, if they can add on runs late, they will be difficult to beat.

Who’s Hot and Who’s Not:

  • Who’s Hot? How about Jose Reyes? In this series Reyes was 7-13 | 4 Runs | 4 RBIs. As everyone knows, as Jose Reyes goes, so does the Mets offense. It’s no coincidence that the Mets scored a ton of runs and Reyes was right in the middle of it.
  • Who’s Not Hot? How about Ryan Church? Since April 29th, Church’s average has dropped from .313 to .264 and he’s got 3 hits in his last 32 at bats.

Next Up For The Mets:

  • The Mets are home to welcome the Atlanta Braves for a three game series. The Braves will be looking for some payback after being swept in Atlanta by the Mets last week. Hopefully the Mets will continue to play good baseball and win this series.
