Mets Game Recap: Mets 5 Phillies 11

Sunday, May 2nd, 2010

Quick Game Notes:

  • Final Score: Mets 5 – Phillies 11
  • Box Score: Click here for the complete box score.
  • Mets Record: 14-11
  • Key Moment In The Game: In my opinion the key moment was the bottom of the 4th inning when the Phillies scored nine runs. Johan Santana had a rare implosion as the Phillies batted around. Santana walked the pitcher Jamie Moyer with the base load. Then proceeded to give up a grand slam home run and then another two-run home run.
  • Game Ball: David Wright: 1-4 | 1 HR | 3 RBIs
  • Additional Comments:
  • After winning 8 in a row, the Mets have lost the last two and fall out of first place.
  • Johan Santana’s line: 3.2 IP | 8 H | 10 ER | 4 HR
  • Up Next: The Mets open a three game series in Cincinnati against the Reds: Monday May 3, 2010 at 7:10pm.
  • Mets Game Recap: Mets 0 Phillies 10

    Saturday, May 1st, 2010

    Quick Game Notes:

  • Final Score: Mets 0 – Phillies 10
  • Box Score: Click here for the complete box score.
  • Mets Record: 14-10
  • Key Moment In The Game: In my opinion the key moment was the bottom of the 4th inning when the Phillies scored six runs. Mike Pelfrey seemed to be cruising along but hit a wall in the 4th. Two dropped balls by Jose Reyes and Alex Cora didn’t help
  • Game Ball: Jason Bay: It’s tough to give a game ball when your team loses by 10 runs. Mets only had three hits but Bay was on base two times today.
  • Additional Comments:
  • Mets 8 game winning streak was snapped.
  • Roy Halladay cooled off the Mets offense. Giving up only three hits.
  • If you haven’t voted yet, go here to vote for Mets player of the Month April 2010
  • Up Next: The Mets play the rubber game of this series against the Phillies: Sunday May 2, 2010 at 8:05pm.
  • Mets Game Recap: Mets 9 Phillies 1

    Friday, April 30th, 2010

    Quick Game Notes:

  • Final Score: Mets 9 – Phillies 1
  • Box Score: Click here for the complete box score.
  • Mets Record: 14-9
  • Key Moment In The Game: In my opinion the key moment was the top of the 7th when the Mets scored 4 runs to go up 8-1 at the time. The key moment in the inning was an Angel Pagan two-run triple. When playing in Philadelphia you can never be sure if the game was out of reach so tack on runs are very important.
  • Game Ball: Jon Niese: 7 IP | 4 H | 1 ER | 1 BB | 7 SO
  • Additional Comments:
  • Mets have won 8 games in a row.
  • Rod Barajas had two home runs in the game. His second multiple home run game of the season.
  • The Mets had eight extra base hits in the game.
  • Defense: Both Jason Bay and Jeff Francoeur made outstanding catches in the 2nd inning. If those guys don’t make those two catches this could have been a much different game tonight.
  • Jeff Francoeur left the game after being hit by a pitch on the arm. The early reports are he is day-to-day.
  • Up Next: The Mets play the second game of this series against the Phillies: Saturday May 1, 2010 at 3:10pm.
  • Series Preview: Mets vs. Phillies Interview with Fightin Phillies

    Friday, April 30th, 2010

In preparation for the New York Mets vs. Philadelphia Phillies three game series this weekend, I chatted with Rich Baxter of Fightin Phillies and fellow Baseball Bloggers Alliance member. Read below as we discuss Ryan Howard, the Phillies chances of winning the NL East and much more.

    Q. Can you tell the readers a little about yourself and fightinphillies.com?
    A. I am the sole proprietor of the blog and have been podcasting a Phillies internet radio show called “Phillies Talk” with a friend of mine named Jim Mulry in addition to the blog, I started out 5 years ago writing and podcasting about all Philly sports but narrowed my focus to the Phillies in the middle of 2007. I am a Sunday season ticket holder for the past few years of the Phillies and enjoy going to the games an writing and podcasting about the Phils.

    Q. The Phillies have been to the World Series two years in a row. What chances do you give them to make it again in 2010?
    A. Well, the odds have to be against them. Three World Series appearences in a row is about as rare as a snowstorm in Florida in May, but I think this team can do it only because they know what it takes to get there. Getting to the World Series is another matter, I still think that everything has to align for a team to make it. Great play, solid fundamentals, and a little bit of luck get you a long way in the playoffs. Do they have the pitching staff to win it all?

    Q. Which team in the NL East has the best chance of dethrowning the Phillies and why?
    A. Early in the season I predicted the Mets would give the Phils the best run at dethroning them. Of course I’ve been saying that for a couple of years now. I always meant it too. There is no logical reason the Mets shouldn’t be able to contend. They have the talent, but I think they needed a GM/managerial change about a year ago.

    Q. Is there one area of the team you would like to see the Phillies improve upon during the season?
    A. Starting pitching after Halladay has been inconsistent. Will this be the reason the Phillies don’t make the playoffs in 2010?

    Q. The Phillies and Ryan Howard recently agreed to a 5yr $125 million extension. Howard is currently 31 years old. Do you think the Phillies gave him too long or too much money?
    A. He is only 30 as of today the day he agreed to the contract extension, but I think the Phillies did what they thought was right. They offered a contract and the money sounded right to Howard and Company. Was it surprise that it happened now? Yes, I think it came out of the blue and no one expected the Phillies to step up and make this commitment. Howard has been consistent in his run production over the years, he has also struck out a lot in the process. It is scary to think how much better Ryan Howard can improve if he just gets more hits. $20-$25 million a year is now the going rate for real superstars in baseball, and the Phillies organization believes Howard is one of them.

Mets: The Real Test Begins This Weekend

    Thursday, April 29th, 2010

The Mets just competed a great home stand: 9-1 and they have won 7 games in a row. With that said, the upcoming three game series against the Phillies, in my opinion will be a big test for this team. Watch the video below as I explain why I’ll be paying close attention to the series in Philadelphia over the weekend.

Five Reasons the Rays Win the World Series

    Tuesday, October 21st, 2008

     VS

So here we are for the 2008 Baseball World Series, Phillies vs Rays. My post season predictions were totally wrong. I stink :) but I got a good feeling about this one. I am picking the Rays to win in 6 and here are five reasons why:

    1. Home Field Advantage: Thanks to the All-Star Game, Tampa Bay has home field advantage and the Rays were an MLB best 57-24 at home during the regular season and 4-2 in the playoffs.
    2. Rust Factor: The Phillies have been sitting at home for a week now with nothing to do. We saw what happened to the Colorado Rockies last year when they had a lot of time off. I think the Rays will jump out to an early 1 or 2 game lead and by the time the Phillies shake off the rust it will be too late.
    3. Fearless: I think we have seen all season long that this young Tampa Bay team is not afraid of anything and time and time again they continue to fight back. They won the tough AL East, beat the battle tested Whitesox’s and Redsox’s in the playoffs. I don’t see why they can’t finish it off and beat the Phillies too.
    4. Game Management: I think at some point in this series Charlie Manuel will either make a critical mistake or just flat out get out managed by Joe Maddon. This is always a concern of Phillies fans and at some point Manuel will cost them.
    5. X-Factor: As he did in the ALCS, I think David Price will play an important role for the Rays. If there was one question mark going into the play-offs about this team it was late inning pitching. Price has shown he can come into a game and be that stopper the Rays so desperately need.
    Prediction: Rays in 6.
