FLUSHING, N.Y., December 19, 2011 – The New York Mets today announced the club has signed free agent righthanded pitcher Frank Francisco to a two-year contract.

Francisco, 32, went 1-4 with 17 saves and a 3.55 ERA (20 earned runs/50.2 innings) in 54 games with the Toronto Blue Jays in 2011. The 6-2, 250-pounder issued 18 walks and had 53 strikeouts. He converted all seven save opportunities and posted a 1.37 ERA (four earned runs/26.1 innings) after the All-Star break. Francisco hurled 16.0 scoreless innings from July 22-September 5.

The Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic native has appeared in 50 or more games in each of the last five years. He was 6-4 with two saves and a 3.76 ERA (22 earned runs/52.2 innings) with 60 strikeouts while helping the Texas Rangers advance to the World Series in 2010.

Francisco set a career-high with 25 saves in 2009 with Texas. He ranks fifth among American League relievers with 302 strikeouts over the last five years (2007-2011).

He is 18-19 with 49 saves and a 3.72 ERA (138 earned runs/334.0 innings) with 368 strikeouts in 331 games with Texas and Toronto during his seven-year major league career.

FLUSHING, N.Y., December 14, 2011 – The New York Mets today announced the club has signed free agent righthanded pitcher Jon Rauch to a one-year contract.

Rauch, 33, appeared in 53 games with the Toronto Blue Jays last season, finishing 5-4 with 11 saves. He compiled a 4.85 ERA (28 earned/52.0 innings) with 36 strikeouts and pitched 1.0 inning or more in 39 of his 53 appearances.

Since 2006, Rauch leads all relievers in wins (31) and has appeared in the second-most number of games (434).

He was 3-1 with 21 saves and a 3.12 ERA (20 earned runs/57.2 innings) in 2010 with the Minnesota Twins.

Over his eight-year major league career, Rauch has also played for Chicago (AL), Montreal/Washington and Arizona. He is 39-31 with 58 saves with a 3.82 ERA (221 earned runs/520.2 innings). Righthanded batters have hit .241 against Rauch for his career, while NL East opponents have batted .230.

The 6-11, 290-pound native of Louisville, KY was drafted by the White Sox in the third round of the 1999 First-Year Player Draft and is currently the tallest player in major league baseball.

I am trying my hand at pod casting. Tanya Mercado of Citi Field of Dreams and I will be working together and launching a weekly podcast called “The 5 Tool Show” under the NDBMedia network. The podcast will focus on the major happenings across MLB with some Mets flavor thrown into it. Currently we are in the process of doing a couple test runs.
