Key Moment In The Game: In my opinion the key moment was the top of the 14th inning when Ike Davis hit a sacrifice fly to score Jose Reyes. TheMets took the lead 3-2 and that’s how it ended.
Game Ball: Jose Reyes: 4-6 | 1 BB | 2 SB.
Additional Comments:
R.A. Dickey: 8.1 IP | 9 H | 2 ER | 6 SO | 1 HR.
Mets are now 24-38 on the road this season.
Mets Offense: 2-13 RISP
David Wright left the game in the 12th inning because he was feeling sick.
Up Next: The New York Mets play the fourth game in Houston against the Astros: Thursday August 19, 2010 at 8:05 pm.
Sorry no video from me today so I’ll leave you with this ESPN video of David Wright talking about feeling sick last night.
In the video below I give my thoughts on trading Jose Reyes, David Wright and Carlos Beltran. I also touch on the weekend series against the Phillies. Give it a watch.
During Thursday night’s 6-5 loss to the Tigers David Wright struck-out with the bases loaded in the 7th inning. That proved to be a pivotal point in the game. After that, my Twitter feed became full with the “David Wright is not clutch” statement. I am one who tends to disagree with this logic of thinking. I’m not saying that he’s the most “clutch” player in baseball but to say that he isn’t “clutch” at all is simply not true. There have been times when he’s come through in key moments and there are times when he hasn’t but I think the positive outweighs the negative in this situation.
Below are a few stats which show that for the most part David Wright has shown to be a “clutch” player.
2010 (as of 6/25/10):
Runners On: 129 AB | .295 Avg | 7 HR | 11 Doubles | 1 Triple | 52 RBI
As I was looking over Mets stats last night I noticed that David Wright’s strike outs seem to be going down this month. So far June has been Wrights best month of the season. Below is a look at how his strike outs are going down while his AVERAGE and SLG% is going up.
Note: The June strike out number is a projection for the month. The June AVG and SLG% are what he’s currently batting as of today for the month of June. Click the images below to expand.
Let’s face it, David Wright is struggling this year and it’s somewhat alarming. Below are three graphs courtesy of Fangraphs that paint the picture of David Wrights stats so far over his career.
Sorry, no video today so I’ll leave you with this.
The New York Mets have now lost 5 in a row, 7 out of 8 and sit in last place in the NL East. Wonder why they are in last place? Take a look at some of these stats below.
The Mets 4th (Jason Bay) and 5th (David Wright) hitters have a combined 91 strike outs on the season.
The team spark plug Jose Reyes is batting .221 and has an OBP of .269.
The last time a Mets starting pitcher won a game was Jonathon Niese on April 30, 2010 against the Phillies. In my opinion this means two things 1) Starters are not consistently pitching deep into games and 2) When the starter does pitch well, the offense isn’t hitting.
Speaking of the offense, with runners in scoring position, the Mets are batting .236 which ranks them 26th out of 30 MLB teams.
Fundamentals: This can’t be over looked. Time and time again this year we have seen this team fail to do the little things. Things like: not being able to execute a bunt, not move the runner over with less than two outs, field or catch a ball cleanly, base running mistakes, etc.. No team will consistently win if they can’t execute on fundamentals.
The Mets schedule this week includes a hot Atlanta Braves team, an energized Washington Nationals squad & the New York Yankees. If they don’t get it together quick, this could get real ugly.
