Twitter: Mets Fans React To The Phillies Signing Cliff Lee
December 14, 2010As I’m sure you know by now Cliff Lee has decided to return to the Phillies. I got a text message from the Irrational Mets Fan at 12:24am telling me of the news. Needless to say he hasn’t slept all night and is pretty much ready to jump off the ledge.
I said on Twitter earlier this morning”this one stings a little”. It’s one thing to watch Carl Crawford sign with Boston, knowing he’s a perfect fit for the Mets. It’s another thing when your most hated rival (at least over the last 4-5 years) just signed the top free agent pitcher and now on paper they arguably have the best rotation in baseball. I am not going to have a good day…
Below is a collection of early morning tweets I put together as Mets fans tweet their reaction to this news. What are your thoughts on Cliff Lee signing with the Phillies?

Good question. I guess time will tell. From their standpoint they let Werth go, signed Lee. So they got a better player that will help their team more and a cheaper price. Not bad eh? Let's see the Mets travel to Philly the second series of the season. So if all holds true we should get Oswalt, Halladay, Lee.

This is a nightmare. I know we werent in on him, but does he have to come to our division? I dont care about theri budget. F their budget. I dont care about their financial solvency; im just looking at 3 guys we cant beat. we own that punk ass Hamels, but them other cats? we shoulda sent texas and extra 30mil in unmarked bills just to keep him ot of our division. it just got tougher to stay in 4th place.

And what is this "if everyon stays healthy and produces as they should" crap. Healthy and productive, this is still the 3rd/4th best team in the division. That is a delusional statement. we would need carrer years from everyone just to keep pace with florida!!!!

As I said in my video today the "IF" statement is becoming the theme for 2011. Not a good sign…

The Phillies have a lot of money tied up for some time to come. Right now they are at ~$170 million for just 19 players for 2011. They have ~$80 million tied up in 4 players (Howard, Halladay, Utley, Lee) for the next 3 seasons ('11-'13). I have to wonder if the Phillies can sustain this expenditure.
