Q & A: Expanded Role For Bobby Parnell

Posted on by Kerel Cooper

In the video below I answer the following viewer question:

Tony – Will we see an expanded role from Bobby Parnell now that Takahashi is out?

Mets Links From Around The Net:

  • MLB Rumors: Carl Crawford Signing Reactions - My reaction is simple. I guess this means the Redsox don’t want Beltran anymore? :(
  • Metszilla: Frenchy Turns Smiles into Dollars - I’m glad Frenchy found a home for his career .268 avg and .310 OBP.
  • ESPN.com – New York Mets: Paulino not looking to back up - Good to hear. I don’t want any players on this team that are content with backup roles. Worse case scenario is Paulino pushed Thole to be better.

Parnell seemed to take to the 8th inning role rather well at the end of his season. I do think he'll need to work on his prep, in game approach, and recovery regimen so he can go back-to-back games with more consistent results.
The Daily News has Collins stating he expects Parnell to be the 8th inning guy. http://nydn.us/gFtIEC
As I remember, Parnell was doing a decent job out of the pen in 2009 , before he was thrown into a starter role with little preperation

You think Parnell can be the teams closer one day?

        • FormerDirtDart says:

I think this season will go a long way toward determining that. He's capable of some of that classic overpowering heat you like to see from a closer. If he gets and holds on to the 8th inning role this year, then I think he can.
My one concern is, that under Warthen, mets pitchers do seem to throw a hell of a lot of pitches. So I worry if he is the guy to mold someone for the closer role.

I think some of that has to do with the last manager as well. Maybe Collins will have a different approach and won't allow pitchers to be run into the ground. Time will tell.
