Time For The Mets To Let John Maine Go

According to Metsblog:

The Mets have until Thursday’s non-tender deadline to offer a contract to John Maine, or else he will become a free agent.

Watch the video below as I give my thoughts on how the Mets should handle the John Maine situation.

It is obvious that Maine hasn't been productive since his surgery at the end of 2008. In retrospect, it probably would have been wise if they had gone back in to clean his shoulder up early in 2009. His getting surgery after being DL'd last season basically shows that all the effort to break down the scar tissue through non-surgical means utterly failed, and may have injured him further. Fingers could be pointed at a lot of people, but in my opinion, it comes down to Maine and his agent. Jerry Manuel's and Dan Warthen's rather public ridicule of Maine could possibly been out of frustration with Maine's refusal to admit he needed surgery again.

With all that said, I have to agree. The Mets should non-tender Maine. If he fails to find a new team through free-agency, by all means invite him to spring training, and see if his shoulder is fixed. When healthy & focused, Maine is a good pitcher, and I honestly hope he can get back to there. But, the Mets shouldn't carry him there. And, if someday Maine becomes another in a long line of Mets arms that come back to haunt them? So be it. good for John Maine
