Q & A: Trade For Cliff Lee or Sign Pedro Martinez
June 16, 2010In the video below I answer the following viewer question:
go57mets – If you were GM, would you rather trade Reese Havens, Josh Thole, and Jon Niese for Cliff Lee, and risk not being able to resign Lee, or sign Pedro Martinez to a 1 year contract based on incentives?

LOL don't worry. As I said in the video I would pass on both options. I would only trade for Cliff Lee if 1) We can sign him past this year and 2) the deal does not include Niese

For as much attention Cliff Lee and Roy Oswalt are getting, what about the prospects of inquiring about the White Sox' Jake Peavy? He's owed a ton of money, but that may be all the more reason for the Sox to ask for less in terms of prospects in a trade. And with him having a sub-par season, he may be had at a relatively bargain price. Any thoughts?

I guess the first question I would have, is Peavy available? The Whitesox traded for him last year and they knew they were taking on years and money so I would think that they decided to make some level of commitment?
Outside of that, I am a fan of Peavy. I wanted the Mets to get him a couple years ago but that didn't happen. A couple concerns though: HR/9 are going up and K/9 are going down. Maybe these numbers would improve if he was back in the NL. This would be a gamble.

I think Haren (Arz) might be a good fit. His contract is going to be a huge weight on the D-Backs payroll, and he wasn't part of their "anyone but" list. Arz might take less, to cut payroll. Citi could help his HR #s too
I like Greinke too. He won't be eating as big a percentage of KC's payroll in '11-'12 as Haren-Arz though.

Kerel, if you were the GM, and made either of the deals suggested by go57mets, Omar would very likely move up one notch on the "Most Beloved Mets GM" list
