Series Recap: Mets Drop 2 of 3 To The Fish

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

The New York Mets lost 2 of 3 to the Florida Marlins, dropping their record to 9-12 on the season. I am so glad that April baseball is over. Maybe the Mets can get off to a fresh start in May. Below is my series recap.

Series Take-Aways:

  • Game Three Seems to be an issue: The Mets are now 0-7 in the third games of series. Finishing strong seems to be an issue for this team.
  • Give Wright a Day Off: If Wright isn’t grounding into a DP, he’s striking out. Sometimes when a player is struggling, the best thing to do is give that payer a day off. I understand that’s a difficult thing to do right now since both Castillo and Delgado are injured but if Manuel gets a chance to give Wright a day off, he should.
  • Lack of Support for Santana: Santana is 3-1 on the season. He’s a Murphy error and JJ Putz 8th inning blow up away from being 5-0. With all the other starters struggling, it’s that much more important that the Mets win Santana starts.

Who’s Hot and Who’s Not:

  • Who’s Hot? How about Carlos Beltran? Beltran is batting near .400 and now has a 12 game hitting streak.
  • Who’s Not? How about JJ Putz? 6BB in 11IP. Not good for your set up guy.

Next Up For The Mets:

  • The Mets travel to the Phillies for a three game weekend series. The Phils are currently one of the hottest teams in baseball. If the Mets can win 2 out of 3 that would be fantastic.

It’s Not Time For Omar To Go, At least Not Yet

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

As the New York Mets have stumbled out of the gate to an 9-11 record, there has been a lot of talk as to what the Mets need to do to fix their issues. One name that has come up in those conversations is Mets General Manager Omar Minaya. In my video post below I look at some of the transactions Minaya has made over the years and the job he has done as Mets GM.

Series Recap: Mets Win 2 of 3 From Nats But I’m Still Disappointed

Sunday, April 26th, 2009

On the surface, winning two of of three is a good thing but I’m disappointed. In a previous series recap, I stated that the Mets needed to sweep the Nats in order for this series to be a success. In my video below I analysis the weekend series and explain why I am disappointed in the New York Mets performance.

Series Take-Aways:

  • Last Games of Series: The Mets are now 0-6 in game three of series this year. I’m not sure what to make of it, but seems like the team already has their bags packed and ready to move on.
  • Bad Ollie appears again: I think we need to stop saying “Bad Ollie” or “Good Ollie”. There is only one Oliver Perez and the bottom line is he’s not good. 4.1 IP | 9 H | 7 ER.
  • Met Offense: The offense is still leaving too many men on base. 27 LOBs in this weekends series.

Who’s Hot and Who’s Not:

  • Who’s Hot? How about Jose Reyes? Reyes is batting .315 and now has a 12 game hitting streak.
  • Who’s Not? How about Oliver Perez? 1-2 | 15 BB | 9.31 ERA

Next Up For The Mets:

  • Next up are the first place Florida Marlins. They come to Citi Field for the last three games of April.

Weekly Update: How To Shake Up The Team Plus Q & A

Saturday, April 25th, 2009

The New York Mets had a terrible week highlighted by a sweep in St. Louis which saw the team make a bunch of boneheaded plays, bad starting pitching and no offensive production. With that said, all the talk this week has ranged from demoting starting pitchers, to benching Daniel Murphy , letting Gary Sheffield go and/or firing Jerry Manuel. In my video below I discuss these topics plus my weekly Q & A.

Q & A

Q: darknova306 - How long would you leave Murphy in LF if his D doesn’t improve? Is his bat really enough to make up for it?

A: Unless Murphy shows that he can’t consistently catch a routine pop fly, I think he will be out there. The Mets knew coming into this season that Murphy was out of position and it would be a challenge for him in LF. It’s simple, Murphy is on this team because he can hit, and as long as he hits he will be out there.

Q: NYMNYJ22 - Do you know if the Mets have any big power bats in there farm system?

A: Outside of Nick Evans, I don’t think there is much in the farm system. At least there isn’t anyone thats ready to play on the big team now. That’s the main reason why I think they signed Sheffield. The Mets knew they needed more pop in the line-up.

Q: nymdsa1 - What are my thoughts on Matt Holliday and our chances to get a big time pitcher.

A: I think there is a good change Matt Holliday will be traded before the deadline and the Mets will surely be mentioned, especially if the offense continues to struggle. Holliday is in the last year of his deal, so look for Oakland to move him. On the flip side, I also think you will hear the Mets mentioned in trade rumors for Roy Oswalt, Jake Peavy and Roy Halladay. All teams who could potentially be out of their races by the trade deadline and if the Mets are in it, which we expect them to be and the starting pitching continues to struggle, look for the Mets to make a move. If I had my choice of the three, I’d go with Peavy. He’s 28, in the prime of his career and he is signed through 2012 with a club option for 2013.

I’ll be doing a Q & A segment every week. If you have a question that you would like me to discuss and answer, please Email Me.

Series Recap: Mets Swept By The Cards

Friday, April 24th, 2009

The New York Mets were swept in St. Louis, dropping their record to 6-9 and they have lost 4 in a row. Below is a video recapping the series and a look ahead to this weekend.

Series Take-Aways:

  • Concerned About the Starting Pitching: Johan Santana is the only sure thing in the Mets rotation at this point. If the Mets are going to seriously contend this year, someone else in that starter pitching staff is going to need to have a good season. At this point, I have no idea who that will be..
  • Met Offense: This seems to be a reoccurring theme in my series recaps. I said it before the start of the season that I was most concerned about the offense. The offense is leaving too may men on base. The Mets are not going to get hot and go on a winning streak if this offense doesn’t turn around.

Who’s Hot and Who’s Not:

  • Who’s Hot? How about Carlos Beltran? Beltran is batting .404 and had 8 hits in the Cardinals series.
  • Who’s Not? How about David Wright? Only 6 RBI’s on the season and is not hitting with RISP.

Next Up For The Mets:

  • The Mets come home for three against the Washington Nationals. The goal this weekend is simple: Sweep Washington and end this loosing streak.

Doc Gooden Q & A

Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009

Last week, in a post I mentioned that Dwight Gooden would be appearing at Modell’s Times Square location (West 42nd Street & 7th Avenue) to promote the Mo’s Zone & Modell’s Clubhouse at Citi Field. During Gooden’s visit a number of Mets Bloggers had the opportunity to send in a couple questions for Doc. I was fortunate enough to get one of my questions in (my question is about the 5th one). See Video Below (Hit The HQ Button For Better Quality):

Another question I asked that didn’t make it in the final video cut:

Q. OnTheBlack.com - Will you be a regular at Citi Field now that your nephew is on the team?
A. Doc Gooden - Yeah, you’ll see me a lot, and it’s great to be back, and the comradery with the fans, and sharing baseball memories with them as well, I’ll enjoy that.

Most of the bloggers were not on hand at the event but Brooklyn Mets Fan was there and you can check out their post and more here.

Last Night’s Mets Loss Is A Cause For Concern

Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009

Last nights 6-4 Loss in my opinion pretty much summed up the Met issues that they have been having this season. In my video below, I explain why I feel the Mets have a record of 6-7 and why we should be concerned about this team.

In Game Post: Now Appearing, Bad Ollie

Tuesday, April 21st, 2009

So I’m going to try something new here. From time to time I’m going to do an “In-Game Post” and see how it goes. Here is my first attempt, please let me know what you think (Good Idea? Like It? How Could I Improve It?).

Inning: Top 6

Score : 4-4

Oliver Perez: In a pre game poll 63% of those who voted said they were not concerned about the Perez start tonight. Well I can confirm that bad Ollie made an apperance: 4 2/3 IP | 6 hits | 5 BB| 4 ER. Perez started off great and lost focus in the 5th inning and never made it out.

Offense: So far the offense looks good. They had a nice 3rd inning by rallying to score 2 runs all with 2 outs and no one on.

Hopefully the bullpen can hold the Cardinals and the offense can put some runs up. We shall see…

I’m currently participating in a live blog chat hosted by Andrew Vazzano over at TheRopolitans.com. Stop by and join the fun!
