Dave – Thanks for the comments. I agree the Mets (or any team) have the right to ask their player not the play in an exhibition tournament. I still think it’s interesting to see all these players playing for their home country. I also love seeing great players that we never heard of or haven’t seen play before.

I agree with you about the WBC, but I don’t understand why some players are forbidden to participate. I like your bold statement that, in spite of the Yankees signings of Sabathia, Teixeira, and Burnett, that the Red Sox are the team to beat in the AL East. I do think that they are making smart moves, but the signings of Smoltz and Penny do delay the progression of Masterson and Bowden.

swamigp – thanks for the comment. I think teams want to protect their investment because they don’t want their stars to risk injury and negatively impact the team. For example, if Santana gets hurt in the WBC, the Mets can flush their season down the toilet before it even starts.

I think the Mets have every right to ask a player like Johan Santana not to play in the WBC. He’s the best pitcher on the planet and the Mets have made a monumental investment in him. Playing in a “meaningless” tournament when he could be prepping for the season just doesn’t make sense.
